Happy birthday!

to us!

It was only one year ago that a few people first got together to talk about starting a local branch of the Modern Quilt Guild

Holly Broadland, a founder of the Vancouver MQG had put us all in touch with each other.

Jo-Anne hosted us at her house and Nicole, Rebecca, Gail, and Brenda were all there. We had our first public appearance in mid-August and our first guild meeting was at Satin Moon Quilted Garden in September.

And here we are, a year later, already in our second home (our third if you count Jo-Anne's as our first) with 77 members

Thank you! To our members first and foremost. To the quilt shops in town for your support. To the big MQG, thanks.

See you at the next meeting, Thursday June 19th at Pearkes Rec. Centre.

  • We have been approached for a commission for a wall quilt at a dental office. This is a PAID opportunity, so please get in touch if you want the details.
  • Someone left their mug behind after the meeting. It's clear glass and Christmassy. We will bring it to the June meeting for you to claim.
  • Thank you so much to the people who stepped up and brought coffee paraphernalia.

May Meeting Show and Share

Once again we had another amazing meeting – thank you! It was our first meeting not at Satin Moon and while we missed Linda's hospitality, it sure was lovely to have more space. We will also finesse some details for future meetings now that we know the space a little better (design wall anyone?!) And once again, this was our biggest meeting ever. If you were a visitor we hope you enjoyed yourself and that you come back again.

Our new meeting place, with a chair for everyone!

We will get to show and share pictures soon, but first we wanted to give a loud THANKS! to all our sponsors. We had seven door prizes from local, and not so local, businesses. Please let them know you appreciate their support next time you are in their shop.

Cloth Castle – Jennifer H.
Gala Fabrics – Judi A.
Buttons N' Bows –Laura M.
Fibre Expressions (in Sechelt!) – Jennifer W.
Eileen's Studio – Christine, who gave it to Daria
Calico Cupboard – Kim H.
Anonymous – Marianne H.

And now for a whopping lot of pictures! This month we had four show and share themes or groupings:

First was from the recent "241 Bag" workshop taught by the lovely and talented Krista Hennebury

Second was from the recently closed "Modern Metallics" competition for the Pacific NorthWest MQG,

Third we invited anyone who is both an MQG and a Victoria Quilt Guild member to show anything they had put in the VQG show (modern or not - we wanted to support our fellow members),

Fourth, the regular show and share.

Here we go!

241 Bags:
L-R: Judy, Nicole, Marilyn, Nancy. If you are still finishing your bag or weren't at the May meeting, bring it to the June meeting!

Modern Metallics:

Well done everyone, and congratulations to Susan! Her quilt was accepted to the "Modern Metallics" exhibit at the "Quilt!Knit!Stitch!" show in August, presented by International Quilt Festival in Portland.

Ed: We wish we had space (and time!) to write out everyone's story or anecdote about their quilt or their process. Those are what makes show and share so much fun.

Quilts from the VQG show: **warning! some non-modern quilts ahead**

Pam's Zentangle/thread painting

Ruth's Modern mini

Ruth's dinosaur bones for her grandson

Lisa's "If Pigs Could Fly". She said that when making this quilt she visited every single quilt shop in town and got supplies or advice from every one of them. We are lucky to have so many shops to help us!

Lois's Ladies. She based this one on a large painting which hangs at Murchie's. It won a ribbon in its category.

Rhonda's grandmother's quilt. Her grandmother made the dresden plates in the 50's. Rhonda has had them for a decade but finished the quilt recently and is thrilled to have something from her grandmother.

Jennifer's Beach Glass. It took a second place in the Modern category.

Jennifer's Bali Wedding Star. This won three awards:
Large Quilt, Viewer's Choice, and CQG best in show.

Anne's Tula Pink Stacks quilt with excellent FMQ all around.

Congratulations to everyone in the Victoria Quilt Guild on a beautiful show!

And last but not least, the regular show and tell:

Anne's traditional/modern. Lovely swirls in the quilting!

Donna's quilt as you go project she did with a young neighbour girl. Shown are both sides - a truly reversible quilt!

Lavern has finished her entry for the Michael Miller challenge already.

Our March guest speaker Marianne is teaching a quilt as you go workshop for the Vancouver MQG and did a super quick demo of lots of different styles of QAYG. We would like to have her present a workshop for us as well.

Gabrielle started eight x&+ blocks from the March BOM but liked them so much she kept them, and kept going.

Rosalie's sweet baby quilt.

Rosalie's really awesome value flying geese quilt.

Jo-Anne's quilt.

Jo-Anne's quilt for her brother

Jo-Anne's small couch quilt/throw made from a pillow and over a long period of time. Ask her about the story sometime - it's hilarious!

Bryan's Christmas sample for the shop

Kim was the happy winner of the BOM draw in April!

Kim peeking out from her quilt.

Geri showing us a save from a block of the month she participated in but didn't like. The reverse of all the blocks is in bright, modern fabric, and she FMQ on each one.
Kathleen saw a technique at the VQG show and is enamoured of it. Look at how lovely some clothes-line, skinny strips, and a wide zigzag can become!
And what a fitting end to our epic show and share! Thanks again to everyone who came.

Meeting announcements are in a separate post, as are the instructions for Block of the Month

See you at the June meeting, Thursday the 19th, 7pm at Pearkes Rec. Centre.

May Block of the Month Instructions

May Block of the Month – Wonky Diamond

You will need:
Solid White, such as Kona White, make sure it is pure white and not off white!, either a FQ or 7” x WOF

Random 1” to 2” wide strips of bright cheerful modern prints and solid colour fabrics *Think tropical skittles*

1. From your white FQ or WOF,  cut four 6.5” squares.
(not pictured)

2. Place your 3/4” ruler mark from corner to corner on your square and cut off the triangle. Discard or save for another project.

3. Take a strip and sew it onto the edge you just cut, make sure the strip goes past each edge by at least half an inch. Press your seams away from the white.
(not pictured)

4. Take your ruler and make the strip wonky by trimming some of the strip off on an angle.*TIP* make sure that when you trim that you leave it at least a 1/2” wide at it narrowest so you have seam allowance.

5. Continue adding strips and making them wonky until the block is back to its original size.

6. Trim block to the original 6.5” square.

7. Repeat steps 3-5 until all four blocks are done. Do NOT sew them together.

Bring the 4 mini blocks (each one 6.5”) to our June meeting.
4 mini blocks = 1 lottery ticket.

This is what four blocks sewn together looks like. We will let the lucky winner[s] choose their layout themselves.
