April BOM instructions!

Here are the instructions and pictures for making our April block of the month lottery, "Nicole's Choice". Thank you Bryan for working out all the math and sizes, and for doing a great demo too.

This month our BOM is based off of this quilt:

You will need:
One fat quarter of Solid White, such as Kona White. Make sure it is pure white and not off white!
One 3” x 10” strip of solid fabric. Use one of the following colours from your left over Kona modern block. Those colours are:
  • Glacier (Teal)
  • Cedar (Orange)
  • Cactus (Green)
  • Cardinal (Red)
One 1.5”x 17” Strip of fabric in an modern print tone-on-tone print that matches one of the three colours listed above, (not the colour you previously chose!)
One 2.5”x 17” Strip of fabric in an modern print tone-on-tone print that matches one of the two remaining colours listed above but is different than the 1.5” strip.

1. From your fat quarter of white cut one 14.5” x 14” rectangle and a 3” x 10” strip.  # tip# mark the short end so you don't cut the wrong side.

2. On the long side of the rectangle cut off a 4” x 14.5” strip.

3. Sew your 2.5” strip into the cut you just made, and square it up.

4. Cut a 2.5” strip off of the right side of the block.

5. Sew your 1.5” strip in to the cut and square it up.

6. Sew your 3" solid colour fabric to your 3" solid white fabric so it forms a loop. Cut the loop so it has at least 2.5" on one end and 4.5" on the other.

7. Cut the block in half, 2” away from the red strip.

8. Sew the new strip into the cut you made in and square your block so its  15.5" x 15.5".

Make one, make 10. Each block gets you one lottery ticket to win the whole lot.

Bring your blocks to the May meeting, May 15th at Pearkes!

April Meeting wrap-up

We're all back from the Easter long weekend so it's time to finish up the April meeting.

We had ANOTHER amazing meeting last Thursday at Satin Moon quilt shop. We set more records this month: largest MQG Victoria meeting ever (59 people), most new members signed up at a meeting (10 new members!), and the most modern quilters ever in Satin Moon at one time. Thank you everyone for coming, and to Linda for having us.

And because of that last one we started our meeting off with the big news that we are MOVING! The May meeting will be at Pearkes Recreation Centre, behind Tillicum Mall. We are sad to leave our first home at Satin Moon and we cannot thank Linda enough for all her hospitality and the support she has given us. We presented Linda with a card and flowers as well as a gift certificate to the Blue Fox as a small token of our appreciation.

From there we moved on to the business portion of the meeting, with reports and updates. (The announcements part of it will be in a separate blog post.)

At the halftime, we handed out bundles of Michael Miller challenge fabric. Thanks to Daria, Diane B., Chris, Kimberly, and Nicole for cutting up all the fabric and bundling it for us.

Do you support MQG Victoria? Only 2$ each!

This month's block for the lottery: Nicole's Choice. Instructions are here!

The Monochromatic X&+ block from last month's BOM demo. Kim H. made five blocks and took the whole lot home.

Last month we collected over 50 blocks using fabric in our guild colours donated by Robert Kaufman. We handed the lot over to Gabrielle who returned this month with our new table banner:

Thank you Gabrielle for your hard work and excellent quilting skills. We are lucky to have you!

And then we had show and share, the part of the meeting done by you!

Michele's hand-pieced and hand-quilted Christmas mini.

Linda showing us her travelling project, an EPP grandmother's flower garden.

Linda made her own papers from archival folders leftover from her job at the archives.

Bev made this cheerful quilt for a new baby in her life.

And a matching vest!

The back of Bev's quilt.

Kathleen showing us a cool embellishing book she recently acquired.

Ruth's fabulous mini.

Gabrielle's granny square quilt. She was making blocks for it at our February sew-in.
The back - a giant granny square.

Sarah showed us some pillows made for a friend.

And Sarah was the lucky winner of the BOM lottery in February, she has the top already finished.

Thea showing us a quilt made from a previously discarded project. Nice save Thea!

Nicole swapped 2.5" squares with someone and loved one fabric so much she blew it up 1600% to make a block.

Stacie has made the first block of many of her modern "Dear Jane" quilt.
Margo found a zombie dolly and dog panel and whipped up these reversible charmers.

Laura's uneven stacked coins, to be entered in the Victoria Guild Show next month.

Jennifer W. quilted this sample for Linda to hang in the shop.

And that was the end of the April meeting. Again, thanks to everyone who came and thanks to Linda for having us.

See you on Thursday, May 15th, 7pm at Pearkes Recreation Centre.
