2014 Inaugural Guild Challenge

MQG Victoria is proud to announce our first official challenge!

Generously sponsored by Robert Kaufman fabrics we will be giving all members a bundle of Kona solids in our guild colours.

Top row, L-R: Cactus, Cedar, Cardinal, Glacier
Bottom row, L-R: Nightfall, Aqua, Celestial, Blueberry

We will be making a banner to display at events or hang from the front of a table. It will have our fabulous guild logo on it surrounded by blocks made by you!

Have you seen our awesome logo?

It was designed for us by Berene Campbell of Happy Sew Lucky. We are so lucky!

At the February meeting each member will receive a Fat 1/8th of the first four colours and a Fat 1/16th of the four blues. Make a 6.5" unfinished modern block and bring it to our March meeting.

** If you join MQG Victoria AT the February meeting, you will get a bundle of fabric. We would love to have you join in!**

Thank you Robert Kaufman!!

January Meeting Recap and Show and Share

What another great meeting we had on Thursday - we're hitting our stride and getting better each month.

November BOM - Uneven Stacked Coins

Thanks, as always go to Linda at Satin Moon for welcoming us and being such a great host.

We re-arranged the store and had so! much! room! And there were more than enough chairs too, so that was another improvement.

Membership officially opened at the meeting and we are well over thirty members already! Do you want to join us and get your very own snazzy membership pin?

We started the meeting with Guild Business: a report from each of the departments (Membership, Treasurer, Social Media, Secretary) before moving on to elections.

After calling for nominations from the floor, the executive was acclaimed.
Your 2014 MQG Victoria Executive:
L-R: Kari (Secretary), Stacie (Treasurer), Nicole (President), Heather (VP Membership), Bryan (VP Programs and Events) MISSING is Christine (Social Media Co-Ordinator)

Bryan demonstrated the January block of the month, a Modern Delectable Mountains. Claiming inspiration from Tula Pink and Bonnie Hunter, here's what he showed us:

Remember to use a SOLID white (any brand) and a MODERN print fabric!

There are lots of exciting things coming up:

  • a future swap with the Fraser Valley MQG in April or May
  • our name tag challenge for February - 1st and 2nd winners by viewer's choice. (Click here for details)
  • the 2014 Inaugural Guild Challenge sponsored by Robert Kaufman Fabrics was announced. (Click here for details)
We also had a guest join us for the second half of the meeting, Connie, the president and co-founder of the Corvallis, Oregon MQG

Then we had Show and Share. This month we asked people when signing in to indicate if they wanted to show anything. This cut down on confusion later on and seemed to make the process go much smoother.

Ursula asked for suggestions on how to quilt her newest work.

Barbara looking at the back of her wall hanging.

Front of Barbara's wall hanging, made with a package of batik turtles she picked up in Hawaii.

Kathy's awesome placemats.

Kathy made them to match the dishes.

Lois' improv pieced twin quilt.

Lois' batik quilt. Apparently it made a big dent in her batik drawer!

A table runner by Lois.

A large and cheerful quilt featuring fabrics by Kaffe Fassett. This one put a big dent in her Kaffe fabrics!

The back of the above quilt.

Nicole's Christmas tree quilt for her MIL. Designed by Nicole's husband.

Nicole's tree pants. Modified from a "Scrappy Trips Around the World" pattern.

January Block of the Month Instructions

Modern Mountain Quilt Block
inspired by Tula Pink and Bonnie Hunter, both two fabulous ladies of quilting

Supplies:
Two 10” solid White Kona Cotton Squares (doesn't have to be Kona, but does have to be solid)
Two 10” Modern Print Cotton Squares
basic quilting notions
and a fabric marker of your choice

Directions:

Making the half square triangles:
1. Start by taking two squares, one light and one dark, and putting them right sides together. Do this with the other light and dark square. With your ruler and fabric marker, draw a diagonal line on both white squares from corner to corner.

2. Using the line as a guide, sew a 1/4” away from it on both sides.

3. Then with your ruler and rotary cutter, slice through the two squares from corner to corner on the line you first drew.

4. Repeat step 1-3 with the other squares until you get 4 HST (half square triangles). Trim your HST to 9” square.

Making the Modern Mountains block:
5. When your squares are squared up, layer them one on top of the other, with the dark of the top triangle on top of the light of the bottom. This way you will be sure that you have one 'uphill' block and one 'downhill' block when you are done cutting.

6. Cut the stacked units in half horizontally (4.5”) and then cut each half in half again so you have four 2.25” strips.

7. Carefully peel the top layer off the bottom layer and you will have uphill and downhill strips!

8. Simply rearrange the strips into the Modern Mountain blocks.

9. Stitch each quadrant together so you end up with four mini-blocks, then sew the block together.

Ta- da!

Bring your completed block to the February 20th meeting and exchange each block for one lottery ticket.

Meeting tonight!

Don't forget to join us at Satin Moon tonight at 7pm.

Membership opens tonight so come on down, pay your dues, get your button and card, show us your quilts, get all the exciting news, and have a great time.

We'll see you there!
